Brunch a la Mexicana | LA Brea

The LA Brea is the newest restaurant in the group behind the well-known Zurich locals The Bite, Brisket and Yardbird and opened its doors about 2 years ago. Like the other restaurants, LA Brea is American-inspired - it celebrates Southern California (SoCal) dining culture, more specifically Los Angeles. LA is a melting pot of cultural diversity, artistic flair and laid-back lifestyle. The LA Brea aims to bring that richness to the plate. The culinary inspiration comes from Mexican cuisine, of course, but the SoCal influence opens the door to culturally diverse flavours served in their own unique way.

Since November of this year, the well-attended eatery has been serving a Mexican-inspired brunch every Sunday. On offer are breakfast tacos, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros or simply puffy pancakes with dulce de leche as well as many other dishes. Just like in a typical American diner, this is accompanied by bottomless filter coffee or bottomless mimosas, for those who need to counteract their hangover from last night. Booming West-Side hip hop beats in the background are of course included.

The brunch could convince us especially by the laid-back mood and the cool ambience. The sharing concept is always a good idea to spend a pleasant Sunday with friends and family. The food was OK but we expected the dishes to be more flavourful and special. We were missing that certain something from this yet tasteful cuisine that makes this stand out from the many other offerings in town. However, to be fair, it must also be said that the brunch has not been around for a long time now and the dishes can of course still be refined and adapted. We therefore recommend that everyone should make up their own mind about it and just give it a try.

If you want to challenge your imagination of Mexican-American cuisine, you should certainly visit the LA inspired brunch at La Brea. There are no limits to the intercultural mix here, be it the ambience, the people and of course the food, which makes your visit an all-time surprise.
